In 1990 the Master System was the best-selling console in mainland Europe, though the NES had a faster-growing user base in the UK. Master System games came in two formats: ROM cartridges held up to 4 Mbit of code, while Sega Cards held up to 256 Kbit. Cards, cheaper to manufacture than the cartridges, included Spy vs. Spy and Super Tennis, but were eventually dropped due to their small memory size. Classic games on the Master System console include Sonic, Streets of Rage, Ninja Gaiden, Phantasy Star and Alex Kidd in Miracle World (which came pre-loaded on many UK consoles).
