The “Toaster” as it became affectionally known by many, was a monolithic Slab called the Nintendo Entertainment System. Arriving in the US and Europe a few years after the original incarnation, known as the Famicom in Japan, this 8-bit console was one of the best-selling consoles of its time and was home to a ground-breaking games including the original Super Mario Bros, and The Legend of Zelda.  The NES sold well in the US and helped to revitalise the gaming market after the crash of 1983. In the UK and Europe however, it was outsold by Sega’s Master System.
